چکیده

The space immediately surrounding us is known to be represented relative to our hands, i.e. in a hand-centred coordinate system (peri-hand space, PHS) (Graziano, Hu, & Gross, 1997; for review see; Brozzoli, Makin, Cardinali, Holmes, & Farn e, 2012). Individuals born without a hand (hereafter onehanders) manually interact with the world differently, potentially altering the representation of their near space. Previous behavioural research on PHS representation in onehanders and acquired amputees found evidence of a mild visuospatial bias against their missing hand side (Makin, Wilf, Schwartz, & Zohary, 2010), suggesting that hand loss impacts visual processing.

Representation of Multiple Body Parts in the Missing-Hand Territory of Congenital One-Handers

Individuals born without one hand (congenital one-handers) provide a unique model for understanding the relationship between focal reorganization in the sensorimotor cortex and everyday behavior. We previously reported that the missing hand's territory of one-handers becomes utilized by its cortical neighbor (residual arm representation), depending on residual arm usage in daily life to substit...

Normalisation of brain connectivity through compensatory behaviour, despite congenital hand absence

Previously we showed, using task-evoked fMRI, that compensatory intact hand usage after amputation facilitates remapping of limb representations in the cortical territory of the missing hand (Makin et al., 2013a). Here we show that compensatory arm usage in individuals born without a hand (one-handers) reflects functional connectivity of spontaneous brain activity in the cortical hand region. C...

Handedness and Graspability Modify Shifts of Visuospatial Attention to Near-Hand Objects

We examined how factors related to the internal representation of the hands (handedness and grasping affordances) influence the distribution of visuospatial attention near the body. Left and right handed participants completed a covert visual cueing task, discriminating between two target shapes. In Experiment 1, participants responded with either their dominant or non-dominant hand. In Experim...

Effects of Handedness on Visual Sensitivity in Perihand Space

Recent studies have shown that changes in visual processing in perihand space are limited to the area around the right hand, at least in right-handers. One explanation for these findings is that perception is altered at locations where action is more likely to occur. To test this notion, we asked both right- and left-handers to perform an unspeeded visual discrimination task under four hand-pos...

The effect of social cognitive representation on the mental property of the body: Evidence based on rubber hand illusion

Mental representations are to be considered as the most advanced aspects of human cognition and in addition to their own physical representations, representations of social cognition of others can also affect the mental experience of each person's ownership of their body. Accordingly, the present research as a quasi-experimental study based on repeated measures, was conducted in order to invest...
